When handmade pottery and collectible toys collide, something magical happens, and in this case, something monstrous. This summer, fans of vinyl toys, kaiju legends, and collectible ceramics came together over a three part mug series with its first release, the Godzilla mugs. It’s a collaboration between Abominable Toys and Deneen Pottery, with all pieces sold out in just two days, proving that sometimes, the love for handmade mug and an iconic brand can be just as powerful as a Godzilla’s roar.

From Vinyl Dreams to Global Collectors: The Story of Abominable Toys

Abominable Toys began with a simple yet imaginative idea: a cartoon yeti named Chomp. Created by Connor McConnell and Benjamin Su (a former Pixar character animator), the company launched in 2018 with a small run of vinyl toys and big dreams of telling stories through collectible figures. What started with just 400 handmade figures has exploded into a worldwide phenomenon, with Chomp now reimagined in countless forms; from glow-in-the-dark variants to holiday exclusives. The heart of Abominable Toys lies in its storytelling. Chomp isn’t just a figure on a shelf; he’s a character with personality, a mischievous grin, and a universe all his own. That narrative-driven creativity, paired with a passionate fanbase, has made Abominable Toys a major player in the designer toy scene. Their limited drops often sell out in minutes, and collaborations with major pop culture icons have only expanded their reach.

Enter the King of the Monsters

The Godzilla Chomp mug featured Chomp dressed up as Godzilla with spiked ridges and a black glaze with blue or red marbling. This mug was handcrafted by Deneen Pottery, wheel-thrown and finished with custom glazes that capture the spirit of the characters.

Each release will have an exciting bonus: the chance for one lucky person to receive an extremely rare Ghidorah Chomp Triple Handle Hammer Mug; a massive, three-handled collectible that’s become one of the most coveted designs in the Chomp universe. Part functional art, part kaiju grail, the Hammer Mug added an extra thrill to an already unforgettable drop. The Ghidorah Chomp mug upped the ante with gold tones and three snarling heads curving up from the medallion, a tribute to one of Godzilla’s fiercest foes.

Why Godzilla Still Reigns

Godzilla isn’t just a movie monster! He’s a cultural icon! Since his debut in 1954, he’s been a symbol of everything from nuclear fear to environmental warning to ultimate kaiju power. With dozens of films, crossovers, and even a Hollywood reboot franchise, the King of the Monsters has found fans across generations and continents.

The Power of Handmade Mugs

In a world increasingly dominated by screens and mass-produced everything, there’s something grounding about holding a handmade object in your hands. These handmade mugs weren’t just machine made; they were forged through artistry and touched over 24 pairs of hands.

This collaboration with Abominable Toys has been a thrilling ride from start to finish. Bringing Chomp to life as Godzilla and Ghidorah in handcrafted mugs has been both a creative challenge and a genuine joy. Seeing the community’s response, the excitement, and the love for something handmade, has been incredibly rewarding. Being part of a project that blends pop culture, storytelling, and craftsmanship is exactly the kind of work that makes pottery feel personal, fun, and meaningful.

Cheers to more monsters, more mugs, and more moments that connect artists and fans through functional art!
