At Deneen Pottery, custom handmade mugs have been our passion since 1972. As a family-owned business, we take pride in creating unique pieces that resonate with collectors and coffee enthusiasts alike. One of our most cherished initiatives is the Illustrator Mug Series, which showcases the incredible talents of various artists. The twelfth installment in this series, titled “Growth Takes Time,” is a collaboration with illustrator Scotty Russell.

Meet the Artist

Gifted illustrator and motivational speaker, Scotty Russell, has become a valued collaborator of ours at Deneen Pottery. Known for his intricate and meaningful designs, Scotty’s work has become a favorite among collectors, with each release selling out rapidly. For his third illustrator mug, Scotty chose to delve deeper, creating a design that speaks to the universal journey of personal growth.

The theme of “Growth Takes Time” reflects Scotty’s own philosophy. As an advocate for patience and perseverance, Scotty’s design serves as a heartfelt reminder that progress, whether in life, art, or business, is a steady journey that unfolds over time.

The Symbolism Behind the Design

While often associated with mortality, Scotty reimagines the skull as a symbol of equality, reminding us that beneath our external differences, we are all human. It also serves as a memento to live with intention—to embrace the present and pursue our passions without regret.

Around the skull, elements of growth emerging from darkness beautifully illustrate the mug’s title, “Growth Takes Time.” These details remind us that personal development often arises from challenges and setbacks. Scotty’s design encourages reflection on the small, meaningful steps we take as we evolve and grow. You can read more about the thought process behind the design on Scotty’s Website

Designed in our Rancher style, this mug holds 12 to 14 ounces, making it the perfect companion for your morning coffee or evening tea. The glaze—a striking combination of Butter and Aqua Blue—highlights the intricate details of Scotty’s design, creating a visually stunning piece that is both functional and decorative.

Each mug is hand-thrown and individually numbered, ensuring that every piece is one of a kind. The bottom of the mug is stamped with its unique number and series information, adding a personal touch and enhancing its collectibility. It’s this attention to detail and dedication to quality that makes our collaborations so special. The Illustrator Mug can be purchased here

“Growth Takes Time” is more than a mug—it’s a symbol of patience, perseverance, and personal development. Through Scotty Russell’s inspiring design, this mug stands as a testament to the beauty of life’s journey. Whether you’re enjoying a warm drink or simply admiring it on your shelf, this mug will serve as a reminder to celebrate your growth—one sip at a time.

Thank you for being part of our community and for sharing in the joy of handmade artistry. Here’s to growth, creativity, and the many more mugs to come!
