Visiting ceramicist Atwater Pottery’s studio, we spy the artist surveying the vastness of his new space in Glendale, California. A large ceramic egg-shaped piece—glazed with a white crackled surface akin to barnacles—sits next to a smaller one the color of volcanic ash. Both pieces appear like excavated artifacts or treasures brought home from another planet.

From Coolhunting: Nestled among car repair shops and warehouses in Glendale, Atwater found the perfect building for his work space. They designed the layout of his new studio to utilize every square foot of raw space—creating a large work area for throwing, glazing and firing work; along with a gallery, kitchen, two offices and a garden designed by Matthew Brown.

From Artsy: Takuro Kuwata is a radical potter who nevertheless describes his work as firmly grounded within the traditions of ceramics. His focus is to push the potential of his materials, while referencing traditional forms and making functional objects.
Sgraf-trio tumblers
From Venice Clay Artists: ‘My sgraffito pots use one of the darkest black slips I have found. I enjoy the challenge of getting the pots to just the right dryness – not too dry so that the cuts are clean but not so wet that the slip is marked by the handling. My designs originate from sources as diverse as an African drum to a stand of bamboo (but not a printed circuit board, as my brother suggested!)’
